Christ the Purgative, Illuminative, and Perfective Way: An Introduction to Christology

Presented by Br Benjamin Johnson OFMCap

Dates: Mondays 15, 22 and 29 April 2024
Time:    7:30pm – 8:45pm
Mode:  Online via Zoom
Cost:     $35 per person (+ booking fees),
$100 for Parish Groups (+ booking fees)

Description: St Bonaventure of Bagnoregio presents a Christocentric vision in The Threefold Way of the transformation of the soul. Here, we perceive that the moulding of the person on earth prepares the person for the fulness of their heavenly reality. These talks will explore Christ’s role as the principle of our purgation, illumination and perfection respectively. In this threefold way, the person becomes a greater likeness of Christ through their capacity to know, love and act.

The Presenter: Friar Benjamin Johnson is a Capuchin Franciscan of the Province of Australia. In 2022 he completed his doctorate at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome on the relationship between the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Marriage in the thought of Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. His research interests include the relationship between Franciscan theology and Christian experience, and scholastic sacramental theology. Br Ben lectures in sacramental theology at the University of Notre Dame, Australia.

Moral Theology: God, the Good, and the Meaning of Life

Presented by Christian Stephens

Dates: Thursdays 9, 16 and 23 May 2024
Time:    7:30pm – 8:45pm
Mode:  Online via Zoom
Cost:     $35 per person (+ booking fees),
$100 for Parish Groups (+ booking fees)

Description: A young man once asked Jesus, “What good must I do to have eternal life?” In reflecting on this line, St John Paul II said that this “is an essential and unavoidable question” that each person wonders about, and that we cannot help but sense “there is a connection between moral good and the fulfilment of [our] destiny… For the young man, the question is not so much about rules to be followed, but about the full meaning of life.” In this three-part series, we will explore the rich foundations of Catholic moral theology, taking St John Paul II as our guide.

The Presenter: Christian Stephens has Masters degrees in both philosophy and theology. He is currently doing doctoral studies on St Thomas Aquinas’ understanding of idolatry and its contemporary significance. In addition to giving talks on a wide range of topics, he has taught courses in Foundations of Wisdom, Christian Spirituality, Moral Theology, and Fundamental Theology.
