St Oscar Romero led the Church in El Salvador through a time of intense violence and political repression. Once known as quiet and cautious, he found a new boldness after the murder of his friend, Fr Rutilio Grande, becoming a fearless voice for the poor and those suffering injustice. Through homilies broadcast across the country, he exposed abuses, defended human dignity and called people back to the Gospel.

At the heart of his courage was a profound devotion to the Eucharist: for Romero, receiving Christ meant recognising and serving Christ in the suffering. He ultimately gave his life for that faith, assassinated while celebrating Mass, and is remembered today as a martyr, pastor and courageous witness to self-giving love.

Guest Speaker: Archbishop John Wilson

Speaker Bio: The Most Reverend John Wilson is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Southwark. Born in Sheffield on 4 July 1968, he studied theology and religious studies at the University of Leeds before beginning formation for the priesthood at the Venerable English College, Rome, in 1989. During his seminary formation, he completed a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and a Licence in Moral Theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana. He was ordained priest for the Diocese of Leeds on 29 July 1995 by Bishop David Konstant. After parish and diocesan ministry in Leeds, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster and Titular Bishop of Lindisfarne by Pope Francis in 2015, and ordained bishop by Cardinal Vincent Nichols on 25 January 2016. Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Southwark on 10 June 2019, and he was installed at St George’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Southwark, on 25 July 2019.
