The anonymous author showed a bit more insight than many who disfigure our buildings with otherwise mindless graffiti. He realised that hate was not good for him and he resented the fact that he was not happy, like most people seemed to be at Christmas and New Year.
This contrast makes this time of year one of the most difficult for those who are struggling. We should always be alert to widen our festive circle for those with no where to go.
a friend of mine remarked that there seemed to be more references to unhappy family celebrations as this sometimes tumultuous year drew to a close. This could be sheer coincidence, unrepresentative of the state of things. Maybe it's the fact that more people tend to be more honest and open. Or could it be the increasing damage done to our families reflected in more unhappy gatherings?
The foundation to personal growth and a decent public life is not found in good schools, plentiful jobs, efficient hospitals, democracy and social justice -- although all these contribute mightily.
The family is the foundation for public life and the nursery of good personal development. As that foundation has become weaker, so every development and structure built upon it has become weaker.
An overwhelming majority of people continue to believe in the central role of the family -- man, woman and children. But the family is not able to withstand every hostile pressure society can devise.
Society, public opinion, our laws and financial arrangements should be geared to buttress marriage and family, so that families can strengthen the health and happiness of spouses and help children develop into productive adults.
Damaged families are the source of more and more of our discontents. Holidays are an opportunity for family strengthening and healing. In many families, some with young children, both parents work, and often working longer hours.
Time together, not to mention quality time, is often in short supply. Families which spend more time together are less likely to fall into trouble. No family is perfect. But good times together on holiday always help.
