'A chance to begin loving anew': 24 Hours for the Lord in Sydney, 9-10 March 2018

Catholic Communications, Sydney Archdiocese,
1 Mar 2018

Parishes across Sydney will again participate in "24 Hours for the Lord," an initiative which invites the entire Church community to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the context of Eucharistic adoration.

The theme for this year is inspired by the words of Psalm 130:4, "With you is found forgiveness."

A number of churches will be open from Friday, 9 March through to Saturday, 10 March for Eucharistic adoration, confession, Stations of the Cross and other Lenten prayers and devotions.

It is a time for Catholics, particularly those who may have been away from the Church and the Sacraments for some time, to begin anew with the Lord and experience the grace He offers.

24 Hours for the Lord is an initiative of Pope Francis, who has invited Catholic churches around the world to join together in offering this dedicated time of prayer and mercy.

Describing the initiative in his Message for Lent this year, Pope Francis wrote: "He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew"'.

24 Hours for the Lord will commence at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney from midday, Friday 9 March and end at midday, Saturday 10 March.  The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available throughout this time.

A number of other parishes in Sydney will participate in the initiative.  Further details of what is happening in local parishes can be found by clicking the link below.

24 Hours for the Lord

In his homily for Mass on Tuesday, Pope Francis stressed the importance of sacramental confession, and again reminded the congregation to not be afraid of seeking forgiveness.  Catholic News Agency reports:

"He [Jesus] does not threaten" but instead prompts his children with "kindness, gentleness, giving us confidence," Francis said.
The act of going to confession is like God inviting you to coffee, he continued.
"This is how the Lord calls us: 'Come on, let's have a coffee together. Let's talk this over, let's discuss it. Don't be afraid."

Parishes wishing to have their events listed on this page should send the details (including the times, venue, Confession availability, and any other devotions that may be planned during the time) via email to encounter@sydneycatholic.org or call 9307 8477.
