Diplomats and Lamingtons as Domus Australia Celebrates Australia Day

On Tuesday 26 January 2016, Domus Australia hosted a very special Australia Day celebration which not only commemorated our national day but also  saw hundreds of guests gather to specially farewell the Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, John McCarthy QC.  Ambassador McCarthy has lived in Rome as Ambassador since August 2012 and will shortly return to Australia.

The Domus Australia Chapel was adorned with yellow and white flowers and red, white and blue balloons representing colours of the Australian flag.

Mass was celebrated by Cardinal George Pell who now resides in Rome as the Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy. Concelebrating was Bishop Bosco Puthur (Bishop of the Eparchy) and 25 priests including:

  • Fr Michael McLean (the Sydney Archdiocese Episcopal Vicar for Education)
  • Fr Julian Wellspring (Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Canberra/Goulburn) and Fr Paul Clarke (Wilcannia-Forbes Diocese), currently studying at the Pontifical North American College (NAC)
  • James Checchio, Rector NAC; Fr Ciaran O'Carroll, former Rector Pontifical Irish College; Rev Daniel Fitzpatrick, Rector Pontifical Scots College
  • Monsignor Robert Oliver, Secretary Pontifical Commission for Child Protection; Msgr Seamus Horgan, Secretariat of State
  • Fr Robert McCulloch, Procurator General, Missionary Society of St Columbian
  • Rector of Domus Australia Fr. Terry Bell

In attendance on Tuesday for the celebrations were Sir Michael Hinze,  British Australian businessman, philanthropist and Conservative Party patron,; Mr Jean-Baptiste De Franssu, President of IOR Vatican Bank,;Mr Alfonso Jayarajah, President of Cricket Rome; Members of the Vatican Cricket Club; Princess Maria Elettra Marconi Giovannelli, and several other Holy See Ambassadors.

To the delight of all present, the typically Australian menu included a wonderful lamington cake in the shape of Australia.

"The Domus Australia staff and I loved learning a little more about the Aussie way when planning this event and welcoming guests of the Ambassador and Domus Australia for the celebrations" said Domus Australia General Manager Gianluca Rafanelli.
