As Chile's earthquake toll has soared past 700 and rescuers race to find survivors, Pope Benedict XV1 has urged the people to remain courageous and has asked the Catholic Church to not only pray for the people but to play a role in relief efforts.
On Sunday the Pontiff told pilgrims in St Peter's Square that he was praying for the victims of the 8.8 earthquake which struck the Pacific Ocean Off the coast of central Chile, killing hundreds and injuring and trapping many more under collapsed buildings.
"I pray for the victims and am spiritually close to the people tested by such a grave calamity," the Holy Father said.
"For these I implore from God relief from the suffering and courage in their adversity."
He also assured victims of support from the Church. "I am sure there will be no lack of solidarity of many, especially ecclesial organisations."
Apart from the fact relief organisations are having difficulty establishing communications with Chile, many are still stretched to the limit following the Haiti earthquake.
Caritas Australia chief executive Jack de Groot said communications have been badly disrupted and the organisation was still trying to ascertain the extent of the damage and loss of life.
He said they are yet to hear from outer lying areas and the damage and death toll could go much higher.
